Two stories running on Manx Radio news today would seem to beg the question has the Isle of Man become a ‘cacotopian’ society i.e. ‘not a good place’.

Of course, I don’t mean in terms of its environment (although the government seems set on undermining that) or the general good neighbourliness of its people but rather the way government and institutions of government behave.

The Celtic League is pressing the United Kingdom Border Agency for answers after a group of Scottish Trade Unionists and Religious Groups were denied access to the controversial Dungavel Immigration Detention Centre in Scotland.

The Centre has frequently been in the news most notoriously because of the practice of incarcerating very young children there.

Alleged irregularities involving Manx shipping and aircraft registers led to a call for regulations to be tightened at the Celtic League AGM in Dublin earlier this month.

A resolution (text below) was adopted and has been sent to the DED Minister:

Nuclear Waste Transport Call for Review

The Celtic League has written to both the IMO and IAEA urging that action is taken to ensure vessels which undertake the transportation of nuclear waste are more safety resilient.

The issue was an agenda item at the recent AGM in Dublin with delegations from several countries extremely critical of lax safety standards which culminated in a fire on board a nuclear waster transport from Dounreay to Belgium .

The Celtic League has written to the Irish Government to condemn the recent bi-lateral agreement reached between Ireland and the United Kingdom covering military training.

The issue was the subject of a resolution agreed at the recent League AGM in Dublin .
