SUPPORT THIS PETITION:

The Welsh Branch of the Celtic League has again called for support to St David’s Day a National holiday in Wales.

A petition launched by Plaid Cymru on 24th February, 2015 has been published on the Branch’s Facebook account with a call for support. Members of other Branches have been signing the petition in a show of solidarity with the Welsh.

As the petition informs, no less than 15 years have passed since Assembly Members voted in favour of a St. David’s Day holiday on March 1st annually and opinion polls suggest that 87% of the Welsh people supported this call. However, the Westminster Government’s Secretary of State for Wales blocked the call and continues to retain power over public holidays.

The petition also calls for the devolution of control over public holidays in time to allow for the Welsh Assembly Government to make a decision on this in 2016.

The Celtic League has long called for all National Holidays to be properly marked in the Celtic countries.

CASE FOR CORNWALL UPDATE:

A report prepared by Craig Weatherhill entitled ‘County, Duchy, Nation or Country? The Case for Cornwall’ which has been submitted by the Kernow Branch to Council of Europe, the International Organisation for Standardisation, various agencies of the United Nations, the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization amongst others has become an unexpected ‘hit’ on the social media platform Facebook.

Reproduced on several Facebook pages run by members of the Branch including one entitled ‘The Cornish are a Nation’ the report has received no less than 49,004 views on that site alone with the number still increasing. Across other Facebook sites, on Twitter and as a feature of the Kernow Branch’s page on the central Celtic League website, including circulation of the report to Branch members, it is estimated that over 75,000 have seen the report.

Branch member and author of the hard hitting and factual paper, Craig Weatherhill, is a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedh, an archaeologist, historian and writer of long standing with a deep knowledge of Cornwall’s constitutional status.

The importance of social media was discussed at the Celtic League’s 2015 AGM held in Dublin and a working party has been established to assess the enormous impact of the various platforms which now well exceeds the circulations of many newspapers.

Early changes implemented by the League include several amendments to the main website to include the ability to search, tweet, share on Facebook and add as an RSS feed together with the launch of a Celtic League ‘app’.

When informed of the numbers viewing his report, Mr. Weatherhill remarked, ‘I am flabbergasted!’
