TESCO USE OF CORNISH LANGUAGE

The Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League reports that Tesco in Cornwall are now using Kernewek – the Cornish language and also flying Cornwall National Flag. This latest progress for the language comes on the back of an earlier decision by Police to introduce bi-lingual signage at Truro Police station.

St Piran’s new Cornish Lullaby

The winning entries to the 2015 St Piran’s Lullaby Competition have been announced by the panel of judges comprising Leslie Bunt, Professor of Music Therapy at the University of the West of England; Sam Parker, Head of Music at Helston College; Mark Pugh, editor of myCornwall magazine and local mother Emma Collins.

The winners are: Iris Boulton, 14, of Madron (11-18 category) with ‘Lullaby’; and Class One of Otterham School (up to 11 category) with ‘The Lullaby of St Piran’.

IMO URGED TO PRESS EU ON MIGRANT RESCUE POLICY

The Celtic League has once again raised the issue of EU States responsibilities under the Search and Rescue (SAR) Convention with the IMO.

The League first highlighted concerns at the possible fatal consequences of an EU decision to ‘deter’ migrants by scaling down search and rescue in December last year.

ILLIAM DHONE: A MOVING TRIBUTE FROM AN UNUSUAL SOURCE

Illiam Dhone patriot or traitor - the question appears to be posed around the time of every annual commemoration and the latter concept was soundly castigated by Bernard Moffatt at this years commemoration.

One man however certainly thought Illiam Dhone was a patriot and he paid unusual homage to the Manx hero many years prior to the current National Illiam Dhone commemoration being initiated in 1963.

The CPT has responded to concerns expressed by the Celtic League about the ongoing situation at Maghaberry Prison.

The League wrote to the both the Council of Europe CPT and the UN Special Rapporteur about the matter. A copy of the CPT response is set out below and immediately below that is a copy of our query:

MOD QUIZZED ON REPORTS RUSSIANS OVERFLEW CORNWALL

Following a military incident off the coast of Cornwall involving two aircraft operated by the Russian Federation and subsequent eye witness reports by members of the public suggesting that the UK Ministry of Defence were being less than transparent in this matter, the Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League has written to the UK Secretary of State for Defence seeking clarification.

GERMAN ASSURANCE OF STRICT APPLICATION OF IMO SAFETY CODE

The Naval Attaché at the German Embassy in London has responded to a query from the Celtic League about the application of International Maritime Organisation Convention A.709(17) which governs the interaction between submerged submarines and Motor Fishing Vessels (MFVs).
