Bad news for Department of Home Affairs (DHA) Minister Juan Watterson MHK who currently has a consultation ongoing concerning the possible the privatisation of some police services.

Watterson’s plans, it seems, include replacing police in roles such as the custody of prisoners by private companies.

The Irish Postal Service, An Post, has unveiled a new 68c stamp to celebrate the 150 anniversary of the birth of W.B. Yeats.

Yeats was undoubtedly a world class literary giant and one of the foremost writers and poets of the 20th Century. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.

The launch of the new stamp, which was accompanied by a first day cover with lines from one of his poems, took place in Sligo.

The Department of Home Affairs has responded to our various queries sent to them in early June.

The Department’s response is set out below and as indicated we were unable to include the detailed tabular breakdown (we had to convert from pdf to word format) but overall totals of staff are given in our note.

Helpfully the Department has set out our questions with the response below each:

Scottish Labour Still In The Pocket of London Dominated Party

Jim Murphy has stood down as Scottish Labour leader. Labour lost 40 of its 41 Scottish constituencies to the Scottish National Party (SNP) in the UK General Election, including Mr Murphy's East Renfrewshire seat. After this disaster for Labour Jim Murphy said he would draw up plans for reforms which he hoped would lead to the party's recovery in Scotland. Speaking at a media conference in Glasgow on Saturday afternoon he announced a set of proposals which he said had been agreed in principle by the party's executive council. 

Isle of Man: The Transport Trust Awards Red Wheel Plaques to Isle of Man Railways

Isle of Man Railways received further recognition of the Island's historical network recently with the award of three Red Wheel plaques by The Transport Trust.

Seventy members of The Transport Trust were on the Island as part of their fiftieth anniversary celebrations, enjoying a packed itinerary and a number of talks.

This included journeys on the Isle of Man Steam Railway, the Manx Electric Railway, the Great Laxey Mine Railway, the Snaefell Mountain Railway, vintage buses and the Douglas Horse Trams.

RSPB Cymru Signs Lease For 12,000-acre Farm In Powys

Lake Vyrnwy Nature Reserve and Estate (Welsh: Llyn Efyrnwy/Llyn Llanwddyn) is an area of land in Montgomeryshire (Welsh: Sir Drefaldwyn), Powys, in Mid Wales. It surrounds the Victorian reservoir of Lake Vyrnwy. The nature reserve and the area around it are jointly managed by the charity Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), and Severn Trent Water.
