The Tynwald National Park and Arboretum (Phairk Ashoonagh as Garey Biljaagh Tinvaal) is in the village of St Johns (Manx: Balley Keeill Eoin). Access is by bus or car, with parking at the entrance. There is car park on the right side when driving from the east into the village just before St John's Church.
The Arboretum forms an attractive backdrop to Tynwald Hill (Manx: Cronk-y-Keeillown) and covers an area of about 25 acres, which divides up into three sections.
A large pond is located a few yards down from the entrance gates. Surrounding the pond and lower slopes there are a variety of ornamental trees and shrubs. This area is divided by grass paths named after the Island's seventeen Parishes.
At the top of the main hill is a viewing shelter with view westwards to the sea and south over St. John's Church to Slieu Whallian, beneath which is Garey ny Cloie parkland set beneath Slieu Whallian Plantation.
Our Visit
We parked and before going into the park visited the Ballahara standing stones. Although not in their original site the stones are set in a pleasant small park opposite the church. Crossing the road we went to Tynwald Hill (Manx: Cronk-y-Keeillown) and then into the National Park. It was Autumn and the colours were wonderful. As we neared the pond the ducks sensing a potential meal surrounded us. I think it was more an expectation of bread rather than a sinister Hitchcock's 'The Birds' moment. Anyway we lived to tell the tale.
A great place to visit with superb views over Tynwald Hill and beyond.
