Happy St Yves' Day

To all our Breton friends, Happy St Yves' Day on 19th May. St Yves Day is widely celebrated in Brittany and around the Breton world. Our best wishes to everyone in Brittany and around the world who are celebrating Saint Yves Day.

Saint Yves was born on 17th October 1253 at Kermartin in Brittany. He graduated in civil law and became a lawyer and judge who was famous for defending the poor without taking payment. Saint Yves was ordained in 1284 and when he retired from law in 1287 became a preacher. The feast day marks the date of his death on 19th May 1303 at Louannec, Brittany.

Lotte a L’Armoricaine

Armoricain provient d’Ar Morig qui signifie « la petite mer » en Breton. Cette recette est destinee pour un poisson ferme et pour des occasions speciales, vous pourriez untiliser des crustaces comme du homard ou des ecrevisses. Ce plat capture l’essence de la mer et l’heritage maritime de Bretagne.

  • assaisoner les fillets de lotte, desossés et sans peau, avec sel et poivre avant de les parsemer de farine
  • dans une poèle epaisse, chauffer huile d’olive avec 1 cube de beurre et quand le beurre crépite, faite dorer le poisson uniforment
  • ajouter un petit verrre de cognac and faites flamber

Armorican style Monkfish

The name Armorican comes from Ar morig which signifies “the small sea” in Breton language. This recipe is suited for a firm fish and for special occasion other crustaceans such as lobster and crayfish. This is the real essence of the sea and Brittany’s maritime heritage!

Celtic Origins to be studied at the University of Wales

The University of Wales Centre for advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies in Aberystwyth has received a grant to fund a three year project to investigate the origins of the Celts. The focus of the study will be to investigate the "Archeological background of the emergence of the Celtic languages in Western Europe".

Barrule: Celtic Band Bringing Manx Music to the World

Barrule - the trio

Barrule are a Manx band that is going places. Bringing a distinctive Manx sound to the musical style shared by musicians from around the Celtic world. The name Barrule is taken from the famous Manx summit associated with the Celtic God Manannán mac Lir, from where their Island home derives its name. The band’s debut album entitled ‘Barrule’ is being released in the UK on May 20th 2013.

The trio are made up of talented musicians Tomás Callister, Jamie Smith and Adam Rhodes. Their growing reputation has seen them supporting legendary Scottish Band ‘Blazin Fiddles’ at Yn Chruinnaght 2012 inter-Celtic festival in Isle of Man. Other appearances around the Celtic Nations have included Festival Interceltique de Lorient, Brittany, Lowender Peran Festival, Cornwall and Cwlcwm Celtaidd inter-Celtic Festival, Wales.

Myfanwy of Dinas Bran - A Sad Welsh Tale of Unrequited Love

The remains of Castell Dinas Bran stand above the Welsh town of Llangollen. The brooding site is the backdrop for the sad love story of Myfanwy. She is a princess and renowned for her beauty throughout Powys in Wales. Myfanwy is proud of her looks and wants her many suitors to proclaim her beauty in song and verse. Many come to court her but are not able to compose songs that truly reflect her looks. She rejects them all.

However, in the valley beneath the castle lives a poor bard Hywel ap Einion. Taking his courage in his hands the young bard goes to the castle and sings and plays for Myfanwy. Whilst he performs his song to her she is captivated and will look at no other. Hywel ap Einion believes his love for her to be reciprocated because of this.
