New Scottish First Minister visits Isle of Man

The new First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, has made her first visit to the Isle of Man (Mannin). She was taking part in the British Irish Council Summit being held in Douglas this morning (Fri 28th). The British-Irish Council was established as part of the multi-party agreement reached in Belfast on 10 April 1998. The Celtic nations that are included in the membership of the Council at this stage are Wales, Ireland, Isle of Man and Scotland.

IAEA QUIZED ON NUCLEAR SHIP FIRE

The Celtic League has written to the Director General of the IAEA asking what steps (if any) it will take following a hazardous incident last month when a ship carrying hazardous nuclear waste caught fire while on passage from Dounreay to Belgium.

The League has specifically asked if the vessel involved complied with both IAEA and IMO regulations for vessels used in the shipment of nuclear material.

Secretary of the Manx branch of the Celtic League, Roy Kennaugh, has written to Scotland ’s First Minister extending congratulations on her appointment.

The Manx Secretary says the level of engagement of the people of Scotland in the recent referendum was impressive.

RENEWED NUCLEAR FIRE SAFETY CONCERNS

The Celtic League has once again raised the issue of fire safety at nuclear installations with the Office of the Nuclear Regulator.

The latest concern follows news about a fire in part of Dounreay’s Prototype Fast Reactor last month which resulted in a release of radiation. The fire led to the sites operators being served with an improvement notice by nuclear regulators.

The line up of speakers for the National Illiam Dhone Commemoration was finalised at a meeting of Mec Vannin on 27th November.

This year’s speakers are:

Cesar Joughin – Manx Oration
Alistair Kneale – English Oration

Cesar is the son of well known Manx musicians Greg and Hilary Joughin and Alistair Kneale organises and supplies contributions to the web-site TRANS-CELTIC.

NATIONALISTS CONDEMN POST OFFICE PLANS

The Manx Nationalist Party, Mec Vannin, has condemned plans by the Manx Government to close main Post Offices in Douglas and Ramsey and franchise them out to a private sector retail business.

At its monthly meeting on Monday 27th November the party approved the following motion:

“ Mec Vannin views the decision of government to close major Post Office retail facilities in Douglas and Ramsey with concern.

Pan Celtic Unity - Welsh Language Commissioner Meets with Irish Parliament to Strengthen the Celtic Tongue

The Sub-Committee on the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language and Related Matters of the Irish Parliament (Oireachtas) met with Meri Huws, Welsh Language Commissioner, on Tuesday, 25th November 2014. The purpose of the meeting was for the Committee to consult with Commissioner Huws so as to benefit from the experience of Wales in the implementation of the Welsh language (Wales) Measure 2011.
