Scotland works to harness the power of the sea

A tidal power scheme in the Inner Sound of Scotland's Pentland Firth has begun to generate electricity. The Pentland Firth (Scottish Gaelic: An Caol Arcach) is a strait which separates the Orkney Islands from Caithness in the north of Scotland. The Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth, is the water that runs between the north Scottish mainland and Stroma Island. The Atlantis MeyGen project's single turbine, the first of four 1.5MW tidal stream turbines that are to be installed in the Inner Sound, has been exporting electricity.

Stunning Support For the Irish Language Revealed by Poll

A new research report into the attitudes of the residents of Ireland towards the Gaelic tongue has disclosed a stunning level of support for the Celtic tongue.  The report, which is entitled “Céard é an Scéal? Public Opinions Towards the Irish-Language – Annual Analysis 2”, shows over 60% people in the South endorse the provision of all State Services in the Irish Language.

The poll also shows significant levels of support for Gaelic in Ulster with 41% endorsing increased opportunities for daily use of the Celtic tongue outside formal educational settings.

French Navy welcome but Greenpeace given the cold shoulder

A petition has been started following a decision by Forth Ports to block a Greenpeace ship from berthing in the Port of Leith instead the vessel has had to anchor offshore.

The Esperanza, a former Soviet navy ship, which is the largest in the Greenpeace fleet, arrived in the Firth of Forth on Wednesday – it is believed its crew plans to stay in the estuary for one week.

Breton musical work to be performed in Phoenix, Arizona on 20 November

As reported on the Breton website 7SEIZH a musical work sung in Breton is to be performed at the Sounds of the Cathedrals event, on 20 November in Phoenix Arizona, sponsored by Catholic Phoenix. Goulven Airault, choirmaster at the Cathedral Saint-Brieuc, composed "Lux Aeterna" for the program. He drew inspiration from the antiphonal church music of the Requiem Mass and the Breton anthem Kantik ar baradoz.

Migrant Fisherman Death 'Issues to be addressed' say ITWF

The death of an Egyptian fishermen working on an Irish trawler highlights “continuing issues that need to be addressed by the fishing industry and Ireland’s statutory agencies” according to the International Transport Workers Federation representative for Britain and Ireland, Ken Fleming.

The death occurred earlier this week on the MFV Endurance off SW Ireland.

An Garda Síochána (the Irish Police) and the Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) have launched investigations into the death.
