Principles - A rare breed - 'A human being'

MTTVs ‘MHK Year two’ are heavy going I’ve missed most although I did savour the ‘Thought and Teachings of Chairman Robertshaw’ MHK. I also watched part of the Clare Bettison MHK rendition before killing it. However I watch the Daphne Caine MHK one all the way through.

Daphne is famous as ‘The Girl that Stares at Goats’ and the analogy with the Clooney Movie is appropriate. Clooney is a radical but of the American type ie. left-wing but with a soft centre. Daphne comes across as the same she wents progress, fairness etc. She is in a word a ‘radical’, however she believes in the system and the system on this Island will never in my view reform itself. She wants progress but also talks up the positives so the interview is balanced. I lost my sense of balance over what this Island or its business community do years ago! When detestation becomes visceral it can eat away at you perhaps I should seek medical help - fortunately Daphne avers she thinks David Ashford MHK at DHSC is doing a good job!

The Isle of Man has always been conservative with a ‘small c’ but if anything there is a nasty type of selfishness in society I don’t recall in the past - although the obverse of that is there are also those who help, contribute and reach out to those in need.

The member for Garff delivers a staccato romp through the year without pausing to take breath. Moulton is enthused he is used to interviewing the living dead or at least dogmatists like Chris Robertshaw MHK so this is fun, the interview breathes, it’s good to be alive.

Daphne has a quick swipe at social media - don’t they all. I make a mental note to try harder next year - but can I be more acerbic? Finally of course she mentions goats.

In a self-deprecatory way when asked to score she settles for seven one less than last year when Paul reminds us it was eight. This is not an exact science anyway and my proposal of allowing a score out of twenty despite any challenges that may present for some MHKs should I feel be embraced.

As for me I give Daphne 10/10 she may no longer be Children’s Champion but she has principles and she is ‘a human being’, a rare breed for a politician in this Keys!
