Nuclear waste sites "not wanted in Wales" says Plaid Cymru Shadow Minister

Plaid Cymru - Party of Wales Shadow Minister for Economy and Finance Rhun ap Iorwerth is calling on Local Authorities throughout Wales to make it clear they reject any radioactive waste dumping in Wales. This comes in response to the British Government-run Radioactive Waste Management organisation's so called consultation to identify destinations in Wales to bury Britain's most dangerous radioactive waste.  Rhun ap Iorwerth who is an elected National Assembly for Wales (Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru) representative for Anglesey (Ynys Môn) stated:  "Councils in Wales should be declaring clearly between now and the end of the consultation on April 14 that we don’t welcome permanent geological waste sites here in Wales.”

The Radioactive Waste Management organisation are searching for what they have described as “a willing host community” where waste can be buried. Disgracefully the plans are aided by the present Welsh administration, who in 2015 adopted a policy of supporting geological disposal for the long-term management of higher activity radioactive waste. The Welsh Government has not identified any potential sites or communities to host a GDF (geological disposal facility) in Wales and say they will not do so unless a community in Wales is willing to host it. This is not good enough. A flawed consultation process that makes it possible for one landowner or one business or any Local Authority to express an interest, will have huge and damaging safety ramifications throughout Wales and beyond. The Welsh government should make it clear that under no circumstances will any part of Wales be used for dumping dangerous radioactive waste
