Castell Powis (Powis Castle). Originally a motte and bailey castle stood on the site of what is now a residence associated with Robert Clive (Clive of India) through his son's marriage. The location of the original castle mound is close to the present house. The later dwelling saw action during the English Civil War and is now managed by the National Trust. The site is located about one mile south of Welshpool (Welsh: Y Trallwng) off the A483.
Our Visit
Arrived at the castle in late afternoon just before Christmas. The house is set in extensive gardens and a deer park. It is built on a rocky ridge above a terraced garden. The oldest part of the structure dates back to about 1200 and for many centuries was in continuous occupation. Parts of the house (managed by the National Trust) and the gardens and parkland are open to the public.
