Castle Du - Sennybridge Castle - Castell Rhyd-y-Briw

Castle Du - Sennybridge Castle - Castell Rhyd-y-Briw

Castle Du (also known as Sennybridge Castle and in Welsh Castell Rhyd-y-Briw) is a thirteenth century Welsh castle. Little now remains but the ruins of a wall and round tower. It is sited on private land northwest of Brecon at Sennybridge (Pont Senni) on the A40 towards Llandovery.

Our Visit

This is a difficult castle to find. If driving west through the village you will see a petrol station on the left side with a turning up a narrow road on the left close by. It is very close to the Castle Lodge B&B. I went into the Castle Lodge and it is one of those places where you immediately think you would want to stay. Very friendly and kind gentleman from the Castle Lodge took me to the remains of the castle which is only yards away, but on private land with scant remains. It is thought possible that the castle originated with the Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Gruffydd in 1262.
