Balbirnie Stone Circle

Balbirnie Stone Circle

Balbirnie Stone Circle, Balbirnie Estate, Glenrothes, Fife, Scotland is a site that dates from about 3000 BC and eight of the stones remain. The stones were relocated due to road works nearby. It is located north of Glenrothes along the A92 and off a minor road towards Kennoway. The circle was originally located about 125m to the north-west and subsequently moved to its present location. It is made up of ten stones surrounding a low rectangular setting of stones at its centre. Deposits of human bones and grooved ware were found. On the site were also four stone cists designed to contain human burials.

The site is located close to the northern edge of the golf course at Balbirnie Park, north from Glenrothes. The site can be reached by taking the B9130 and then going into Balbirnie Park. Go past Balbirnie House and on towards the golf club. There is a car park close by. Then following a track north through the woods that runs along the edge of the course towards Tofthill Road you will reach the site. Alternatively, the circle is close to Tofthill Road, which runs parrallel to the main A92 road.

This is an interesting site to visit and although not in its original location, it is not far away and is set in the way that it was arranged in about 3000BC. It is not far from the Balfarg Henge and is linked to this Neolithic site. Balfarg is one of a complex of related sites that were associated with ritual and burial from 4000 BC to 1500 BC. When visiting this Stone Circle then it makes sense to visit nearby Balfarg to which it is clearly ceremonially linked.
