Laugharne Castle - Castell Talacharn

Laugharne Castle (Castell Talacharn) is a medieval castle overlooking the River Taf, but was later developed into an Elizabethan Mansion. The castle developed from the early twelfth century and was later strengthened in stone. The inner ward has two towers and there is a curtain wall on the outer ward with a gatehouse. The site is at Laugharne (Welsh: Talacharn) on the south coast of Carmarthenshire, Wales (Welsh: Sir Gaerfyrddin, Cymru).

Our Visit

The remains seen today date back to the late thirteenth century, although a twelfth century Norman castle is said to have stood on this site. The castle was the site of battles between the Normans and Welsh. It was later strengthened and eventually developed into a Tudor mansion. The castle was in Royalist and then Parliamentary control during the Civil war and partially destroyed after that. The castle is located on the Taf estuary in a magnificent setting. The castle grounds are open between 1st April and 30th September. It is a magnificent place to visit and we loved the walk around the outskirts of the castle along the waters edge.

Laugharne is also associated with Dylan Thomas Welsh poet and writer (27th October 1914-9th November 1953). He lived with his wife Caitlin at The Boathouse in Laugharne during the last years of his life between 1949 and 1953. He wrote 'Under Milk Wood' here. The Dylan Thomas Boathouse is open to the public from May to October between 10am and 5.30pm and November to April between 10.30am and 3.30pm.
