St Clears Castle - Castell Sanclêr

St Clears Castle - Castell Sanclêr

Castell Sanclêr (St Clears Castle) is an eleventh century structure and a square bailey, earthwork and ditch can be seen. It consists of an oval mound with a flattened top. It is located about half a mile south of St Clears, Carmarthenshire, Wales (Welsh: Sanclêr, Sir Gaerfyrddin, Cymru) and on the A4066 road.

Our Visit

We visited the site on the way south towards Laugharne. As you drive south from St Clears it is on the left hand side off Bridge Street. The motte stands to the side of a large bailey that is now used as a playing field. At the side of the gate to the field there is an excellent information board giving details on the site and pictures depicting the castle when fully functioning and details of the settlement that grew around it. It exchanged hands between the Normans and Welsh on a number of occasions before falling into decline from the 14th Century.
