Brownshill Portal Tomb - Tuama Ursanach Chnoc an Bhrúnaigh

Brownshill Portal Tomb - Tuama Ursanach Chnoc an Bhrúnaigh, is a Portal Tomb with a very large and heavy capstone supported by three uprights and two boulders. There is evidence of another upright nearby. It was built between 4000 and 3000 BC. This is a Portal Tomb with a very large and heavy capstone supported by three uprights and two boulders. There is evidence of another upright nearby. A portal tomb is one where the entrance has two parge portal stones. It is covered with one large capstone resting on the portals and slopes downwards towards the rear. The capstone at Brownshill weighs about 150 tons and has been described as the heaviest of its type in Europe. The capstone is thought to have originally been covered by an earthen mound and a stone blocked the entrance. 

Getting there

Returning south from Moone and Castledermot is Brownshill Dolmen. The site is about 3km east of Carlow (Irish: Ceatharlach) just off the R726 in County Carlow (Irish: Contae Cheatharlach).
