Castell Ogwyr (Ogmore Castle) is an oval shaped Norman castle constructed around 1115 with further fourteenth century additions and is on the site of a previous wood and earth structure. The remains include a stone curtain wall, fireplace, parts of the first floor, west wall, gatehouse, roundtower and close by a vaulted cellar. The site is located northwest of the village of Ogmore-by-Sea on of the B4524 on the east bank of the River Ogmore and south bank of the River Ewenny about two and a half miles southwest of Bridgend.
Our Visit
The impressive remains of the structure stand beside the river in a very attractive location. We drove down a short narrow road that takes you to a riverside car parking area next to the castle. There was only two other people visiting this site on the cold clear Autumn day when we arrived. Entrance to the castle is free and in exploring the remains of this once impressive structure you get a clear picture of the fortress when it was in full use.
It is located on flatland guarding a major ford crossing point. There are also stepping stones across the river. It is a really pleasant place both to see the castle and then amble along the river. A visit to the site is recommended.
