Breage - Eglosvreg

Breage - Eglosvreg

Breage (Eglosvreg) is a village north from Porthleven and about three miles from Helston on the A394. It is named after Saint Breaca, an Irish missionary. The granite church of St Breaca/Breage is dedicated to him and was built in the fifteenth century. On the north wall of the church are five medieval wall paintings and a third century Roman milestone is preserved in the church and in the churchyard is a Hiberno-Saxon cross head.

Our visit

The church is beautiful and dedicated to Saint Breaca. Saint Breaca was said to be a disciple of Saint Brigid of Kildare. She travelled from her native Ireland to Cornwall in about 460 AD. We walked in the grounds and touched the old cross standing close to the church entrance and surrounded by yellow blooming spring daffodils. Inside the medieval paintings on the wall are clearly visible. Within the church is also the old Roman marker stone bearing the name of Marcus Cassianius. This church is really worth visiting and highly recommended.
