Gig Passes go on sale for Island’s biggest Celtic festival
Gathering together the very finest musicians from around the Celtic world, Yn Chruinnaght is the biggest Celtic festival on the Isle of Man. Now firmly established in Peel, it makes it home amongst the fantastic community venues and pubs around the Centenary Centre. From 13-17 July you can enjoy a whole load of energy, attitude and talent from Dublin’s finest folk miscreants Lynched, Welsh superstars Calan, exceptional Cornish singer-songwriter Kezia, and Brittany’s delightful An Tri DipoP. And this line-up of visiting acts is nothing without the all-important backdrop of the über-talented Manx music and dance scene – true to its name, Yn Chruinnaght gathers them all together.
A limited number of Gig Passes are available to buy online now – they’ll be in the shops later in the year. Gig Passes are at a very special price of £45 and will get you into four nights of top-class gigs, saving precious pounds and that angst of missing out. And you don’t have to just trust us when we tell you what treats are in store – here are some of the words which those in the know have shared about these fab acts…
"Calan have it all. Energy, attitude, freshness, a sense of fun and above all, real talent." (Frank Hennessy, BBC Radio Wales). Featuring harp, fiddle, vocals, accordion, guitar AND one of Wales’ finest step dancers, Calan will captivate you with their fresh new approach to Welsh trad. They’ll be taking to the stage to open the festival on Wednesday 13 July – check them out on: www.calan-band.com
‘They do mark a turning point in folk… that authentic voice of the streets is back in a big way.’ (Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio). With TV appearances on Later with Jools Holland, Lynched are hot property and we’re oh so excited that they have agreed to a bit of island hopping. Combining distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar, their repertoire spans humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and street-songs, classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish and American dance tunes, and their own original material. With the last Centenary Centre gig of the festival, they’ll be singing their way to your hearts on Saturday 16 July: lynchedmusic.com
Fest-noz quartet serve up a tantalising taste of Brittany (Folk Wales). An Tri DipoP present an original mix of folk and pop led by the vocal talents of Anjela Lorho-Pasco. Breton music is often about a dialogue – Anjela sets this up with trumpeter Brian Ruellan, backed by guitar and acoustic bass. With toe-tapping music perfect for concert and designed for dancing, the quartet were worthy winners of the prestigious trophy Loïc Raison at Brittany’s Lorient festival in 2014. Catch them in Peel on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 July : antridipop.wix.com/home
Ralph McTell described singer-songwriter Kezia as “exceptional – one of the most original and exciting artists to come out of Cornwall” [Ralph McTell]. Captivating audiences around the world, Kezia’s self-penned songs with simple, thoughtful melodies are infused with fragility and strength in equal measure. Drifting between Folk and Blues by the way of Country, Kezia will enchant and enlighten you, just as she has festival-goers around the world. She will be performing throughout the festival, and will be onstage at the Centenary Centre on Friday 15 July:keziaofficial.co.uk
Joining Kezia for that Friday night of Celtic Voices will be internationally-acclaimed Manx singer Christine Collister. With an amazing 19 albums to her name, Christine has a remarkable power to mesmerize audiences with a unique blend of soul, blues, pop, jazz, country and folk: www.runningmedia.com/christine-collister
