Chief Minister Provides Detailed Response on Silt Row

NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

The Isle of Man Chief Minister has responded in some detail to queries from the Celtic League about the harbour silt dumping issue.

In the letter which was accompanied by supporting documentation he sets out his support for his colleague Ministers at DEFA and DOI and disputes the silt is toxic.

He also says he believes the issue could have been avoided by earlier action.

It is commonly said that the Cornish are inward looking. Cornwall has even been described by some ill informed folks as the 'insular peninsula'. Nothing could be further from the truth!

The photograph below shows a group of Cornish Miners in South Africa c. 1900. The gentleman in the centre middle row is my maternal Great Great Grandfather.

A tin miner, he left Redruth in Cornwall on one Tuesday bound for mining work overseas.

Leaving his wife, a Bal Maiden (a mine surface worker), and child behind, he mined gold in South Africa, was conscripted into a town guard battalion in the Boer War and saw action and thereafter headed to Venezuela where he mined diamonds.

Isle of Man: A Wallaby Walk in the Curragh

The expanding group of wild red-necked wallabies in the northern Curragh have long been a source of fascination, since their celebrated escape from the nearby Wildlife Park during the 1970s. But with the help of the Manx Wildlife Trust visitors were able to catch a glimpse of some of these shy animals and learn more about this extraordinary piece of landscape.

Leader of the Wallaby Walk was Biodiversity Education Officer Dawn Dickens, who led a small group of enthusiasts in their hunt for the elusive wallabies.

Manx delegates to the Celtic League AGM in Dublin last weekend (10-12th April) moved a three section resolution on seabed rights (the text of the motion is set below):

“This AGM:

a) calls upon the Isle of Man Government to assert its sovereign rights to territorial and seabed rights to the median line with neighbouring jurisdictions in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)

As the attitude of the United Kingdom becomes increasingly more hostile towards the Isle of Man with what really amount to unilateral cuts to the VAT agreement and threats (as part of a wider range of sanctions against offshore centres generally) to interfere in our ability to generate income it is important that the Manx government maximise and diversify the Islands economic base.

The great contaminated (or ‘toxic’ – depending on your point of view) ‘silt war’ in the West has seen the end of round one.

At present the Isle of Man government are ahead on points and whether this goes to further rounds or ends up being resolved depends on how things develop from here.

Critical to that development will be the guarantee or ‘Covenant’ that the local authority (German Commissioners) has won a commitment on (more of that later).

The jury is still out on this week’s submarine incident but we think it’s more than likely the Brits are in the frame and they have got form!

Speculation without any basis in fact at all is that a Russian submarine may have been responsible for the snagging of a trawler from Ardglass.

The Celtic League AGM held at the headquarters of Conradh na Gaeilge in Dublin last weekend (April 10 -12th) adopted a resolution welcoming consultation announced in the North on the ‘Draft Irish Language Bill’.

A brief resolution text below was adopted unanimously by the meeting.
