The terrible price of ‘war games’ is played out in fishing grounds over three decades.

Northern Ireland news source the ‘Down News’ reports today that Assembly Fisheries Minister Michelle O’Neil is determined to get answers (starting with the Ministry of Defence) about the incident last week where a Ardglass motor fishing vessel (MFV) the Karen was snagged by a submarine off the West coast of the Isle of Man.

The Isle of Man Chief Minister has responded in some detail to queries from the Celtic League about the harbour silt dumping issue.

In the letter which was accompanied by supporting documentation he sets out his support for his colleague Ministers at DEFA and DOI and disputes the silt is toxic.

He also says he believes the issue could have been avoided by earlier action.

Manx delegates to the Celtic League AGM in Dublin last weekend (10-12th April) moved a three section resolution on seabed rights (the text of the motion is set below):

“This AGM:

a) calls upon the Isle of Man Government to assert its sovereign rights to territorial and seabed rights to the median line with neighbouring jurisdictions in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)

The great contaminated (or ‘toxic’ – depending on your point of view) ‘silt war’ in the West has seen the end of round one.

At present the Isle of Man government are ahead on points and whether this goes to further rounds or ends up being resolved depends on how things develop from here.

Critical to that development will be the guarantee or ‘Covenant’ that the local authority (German Commissioners) has won a commitment on (more of that later).

The jury is still out on this week’s submarine incident but we think it’s more than likely the Brits are in the frame and they have got form!

Speculation without any basis in fact at all is that a Russian submarine may have been responsible for the snagging of a trawler from Ardglass.
