Just over two week after the Celtic League suggested, in the wake of the decision of Chris Thomas MHK to quit the Office of Fair trading, that others might follow his lead another junior Departmental figure has ‘jumped ship’.

Juan Turner MLC has quit (or been fired) from DOI; it seems to be a bit of both.

CPT Respond on Scottish Death in Custody

The Council of Europe (CPT), the body which inspects and sets standards for prisons, police stations, and other places of detention in Europe, has written to the Celtic League thanking us for the information we forwarded about the death in custody of Mr Sheku Bayoh at a police station in Scotland in May.

Celtic League is often criticised for having an anti-militarist perspective and we were especially vocal about the recent armed forces reserves recruitment initiative in Mann.

We have also been outspoken over the age of recruitment (16) and the propaganda used to interest even younger people e.g., the cadet forces.

But hey, maybe we are going a bit over the top! Perhaps a younger perspective would be more illuminating (see Youtube link).

Submariner Released but League Urge CPT to Scrutinise Military Prisons

The Royal Navy submariner Able Seaman McNeilly who had expressed concerns about safety issues on British nuclear submarines has been discharged from the Service.

The MOD has released no other details although Mr McNeilly has again spoken out.

A media release has been sent to us by Culture Vannin setting out what seems to be the largest contribution to the Lorient Festival by a Manx contingent since Manx musicians and dancers started to attend.

The Isle of Man and Cornwall join forces for major presentation in Brittany this Augus (Culture Vannin)

Uniquely this year sees a collaborative arrangement between Mann and Kernow.

A Huge Loss for Brittany – RIP Jean-Yves Cozan

Brittany lost one of its most ardent advocates when Jean-Yves Cozan passed away on Monday 15th of June at the age of 76 years old.

The ceremony will take place today, 18th of June, in Kemper/Quimper.

Although he was not a member of any Breton political party, but a centre party instead (UDF, created by Giscard d’Estaing), he was always first to defend the rights of Brittany and the Breton language.

Manx Government Dither Over Same Sex Marriage and Equality Legislation

As the Isle of Man government gets drawn into an argument over semantics with the Church of England over the same sex marriage issue pressure is building in N. Ireland to force a change in the law there. At present Mann and Northern Ireland share the dubious dual distinction of being the two last outposts of homophobic bigotry in Western Europe.
