Isle of Man: Manx Gaelic Book Review - Paloma

A close working relationship between the Manx Language Development Officer at Culture Vannin and the Irish Language Editor of The Irish Times has resulted in the release of the first of a trio of new books in Manx Gaelic.

Paloma was written by Pól Ó Muiri (aforementioned editor) and charts the story of a young female Garda, Paloma Pettigrew, who relocates to the peaceful Irish countryside. But she soon encounters unexpected problems and finds herself solving a complicated and dangerous crime.

All fellow Celtic peoples, comrades and friends are invited to sign and spread this petition for Cornwall!

A long way from the Highlands of Scotland and just over a two hour drive to the Mexican border, is San Antonio, the second largest city in Texas. San Antonio is home to the iconic Alamo and the charming Spanish Colonial “River Walk” and this year is host to an event sponsored by the San Antonio Highland Games Association: The 15th Anniversary San Antonio Highland Games and Celtic Music festival scheduled to be held  on April 5th and 6th , 2014 at the Helotes Fair Grounds just northwest of San Antonio, Texas.

With severe winter storms dominating the Island’s weather system during the past few months, it was fortunate that the day selected for the Snowdrop Walk at Dalby dawned bright and sunny.

Breton Red Caps Inaugural Congress – Issue Demands and Threaten Radical Protests – Calls for the Formalisation of the Breton Language and Culture

The Radio France International website rfi.com is reporting that “Regional Campaigners” who blocked French roads and destroyed tax collection portals last year have promised "more radical" protests if the government does not scrap its controversial ecotax and give in to other demands. It is widely recognised that the 2013 disorders, ostensibly in opposition to taxes which were viewed as unfairly impacting the Breton agricultural sector, assumed a Breton separatist dynamic.  

 

Forward Step For Irish – Major Retailer Raises Profile of Gaelic in Daily Operations

The Irish Times are reporting that the ubiquitous UK food retailer Tesco have announced that “consideration” has been undertaken on  the introduction of bi-lingual self-service check out in its stores throughout Ireland. According to the Times article Tesco have 146 stores in Ireland and separate published reports in 2013 have the retailer enjoying a market share of approximately 25%.

New Economic Report Exposes Failings of UK Treasury Stance on Monetary Union as Support for Scottish Independence Increases

United Kingdom opposition to a monetary union with an independent Scotland was  thrown into confusion today. In a withering attack on the United Kingdom’s Chancellor, George Osborne’s stance that he would block any such monetary union a report has described the English anti-Scottish independence MP Osborne of basing his assertions on  “a lurid collage of fact, conjecture and fantasy”. This report comes from Professor Leslie Young, of the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business in Beijing.

Cornish library project captures public imagination

Redruth Cornish Language Group which meets at the Melting Pot Café, Krowji, the former Redruth Grammar School in Cornwall has been adding to its extensive collection of books written in the Cornish language and is now pleased to allow the public restricted access to the library whilst they visit the café.

The library was the idea of a Bard of Gorsedh Kernow and a member of the Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League who combined their talents to raise the funds and to publicise the collection.
