Ireland Supports Independence of International Criminal Court's (ICC) as Chief Prosecutor Seeks to Issue Arrest Warrants on Israel's Prime Minister and Defence Minister.

On Monday 20th May 2024, the International Criminal Court's (ICC) chief prosecutor, announced that he would seek arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu the Prime Minister of Israel and the Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant as well as three senior Hamas officials. Since the Israeli attacks on Gaza began at least 34,735 people in Gaza and wounded another 78,108. Meanwhile Israeli settlers, backed by the Israeli army have also continued their attacks on civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory in the West Bank.

Predictably, Israeli Defence Minister, Yoav Gallant reacted to the arrest warrants against him and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describing them as a "disgraceful" attempt to interfere in the war. However, as many people calling for a ceasefire have pointed out the attack on Gaza is not a war but mass slaughter, ethnic cleansing and genocide. Meanwhile Ireland's Minister for European Affairs, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has said it was vital for the International Criminal Court (ICC) be allowed to continue its work on the issue of possible arrest warrants for Israel's Prime Minister and Defence Minister. Other countries including France, Belgium and Slovenia have also backed the International Criminal Court (ICC).
