Martha Hughes Cannon (July 1, 1857 – July 10, 1932) was born in Madoc Street, Llandudno and emigrated with her family to the USA in 1860. She went on to be a Utah women's rights advocate, suffragist, and Utah State Senator. Martha Hughes Cannon worked as a doctor and was a tireless campaigner for women's rights. She helped put women enfranchisement into Utah's constitution when it was granted statehood in 1896. She became the first female State Senator in the United States when elected on November 3, 1896.
Recognition of her achievements in the United States include a statue and a government building named after her in Salt Lake City where she lived. Utah State also voted to erect a statue of her in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, where every state gets two statues to commemorate notable people. However, there is no permanent memorial to her in Llandudno the Welsh town of her birth. A campaign now underway to change this has also gained the support of Guto ap Owain Bebb, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Welsh constituency of Aberconwy.
