Welsh voluntary action group collect largest plastics haul in Cardiff river clean-up

Grŵp Afonydd Caerdydd - Cardiff Rivers Group (CRG) is a community voluntary action group. They work to improve the cleanliness of the rivers, streams and lakes in Cardiff (Caerdydd) the capital of Wales and surrounding areas. In doing so they are improving the habitat in and around the waterways of Cardiff, which also increases the diversity of wildlife and plants, adding to their attractiveness and importance.

They have just undertaken work on River Rhymney (Afon Rhymni), off Lamby Way, which has resulted in what has been described as the largest plastics and other rubbish haul since the group was founded in 2009. They recovered car wheels, gas bottles, fridges, engine oil containers and footballs. The 50 volunteers filled 150 bags with discarded  plastic from the river bank in Cardiff during the weekend. Further details of the commendable work being undertaken by this dedicated group can be found on the CRG website.

This movement of volunteers, working to collect damaging plastic and other rubbish from rivers, beaches and other areas, has been growing in all of the Celtic nations over recent years. They are making a significant impact on improving the environment. Having led the way it is now also the responsibility of governments around the world to show the same resolve with meaningful legislation to protect the environment.
