Greedy race to exploit Arctic poses additional risk to wildlife

We’ve enjoyed a record summer in these Islands so is it global warming? Who knows the jury is out. What is not in doubt is that winter sea ice in the Arctic has seen record lows for the last several years.

The changed environment brings greater pressures for wildlife like the emaciated polar bear illustrated.

However, as this article a few months ago in Scientific America set out, it's not just possible warming of the ice cap that creates problems, another danger is man and the scrabble that a more temperate Arctic provides for nations to race each other to exploit mineral resources hitherto inaccessible (link):
