Irish Prime Minister Accuses UK of Double Standards

The Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Leo Varadkar has described the UK government's criticism of his comments about a united Ireland as a "double standard". This comes after Irelands Prime Minister said last week that he believed he would see a united Ireland in his lifetime. In response, the British  Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton Harris said the remarks were "unhelpful". The Irish PM replied: "Why is there a double standard applied to Irish politicians when we say what's in our constitution, that we'd like to see a united Ireland and work towards it?" He also pointed out that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak describes himself as a "proud unionist" and others in the UK government often speak about their commitment to the union. This exchange comes as the campaign for an island-wide referendum on Irish unity continues to gain support.
