Ardestie Earth House

Ardestie Earth House is located to the east of the city of Dundee (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Dè) or northwest from the town of Carnoustie (Scottish Gaelic: Càrn Ùstaidh) along the A92 road and then off the B962 road to Monikie. It is an example of an earth house or souterrain and is thought to have been built in the first two centuries AD. There is an underground passage over 24m long, with a stone-lined drain in its floor. Excavations in 1949 and 1950 revealed a complex of buildings at ground level, with access to the earth house within one building. The site is open during the summer months from 1st April to 31st October.
