Welsh beach voted one of best in the world for 2018

Three Cliffs Bay has been named in the top 20 beaches in Europe for 2018. Three Cliffs Bay is a bay on the south coast of the Gower Peninsula (Penrhyn Gŵyr) in South Wales. The bay takes its name from the three cliffs carved by the sea from 300 million-year-old carboniferous limestone that jut out into the sea. Individual beaches make up the bay each with their own names, including Pobbles Bay to the east of the Three Cliffs, and Tor Bay to the west. Although the beaches are separated at high tide, they are accessible to each other at low tide on foot over the sands. Pennard Pill, a large stream, flows into the sea in the middle of the bay. About 500 yards inland and standing high above the main beach is Pennard Castle. Built in the early 12th century, it offers stunning views from the Castle down to the sparkling blue waters of the Bay far below.

It is of no surprise that the judges from an online travel organisation, Flightnetwork, were so taken by Three Cliffs Bay. In selecting and ranking 400 of the worlds top beaches, they say they were helped by 1000 of the industry's leading travel professionals including travel journalists, editors, bloggers, and agencies. The perfect landscape, sandy beaches, river flowing into the sea and backdrop of the ancient ruined Pennard Castle saw the Welsh beach rated 8/10 for its untouched beauty, 10/10 for remoteness and 7/10 for sand and water quality.
