Albert Bock (1974-2018) – passing of a key figure in the revitalisation of the Cornish language
The Cornish language community is deeply saddened at the news of the passing of Albert Bock, a brilliant linguist who helped standardise the Cornish language.
Cornish Language Lead at Cornwall Council, Mark Trevethan, said: ‘Everyone is very upset at the news of Albert’s passing. He worked hard to bring the different parts of the language community together and was instrumental in standardising Cornish. This was a massive undertaking and put in place the foundations for official use of Cornish today. We all owe him an enormous debt.’
Albert was a member of the Linguistics Department of the University of Vienna and came to Cornwall as part of an international panel to assist with standardising Cornish in 2008. He brought with him an expert knowledge of Celtic languages and a commitment to human rights and language rights.
He will be remembered for his contribution to Cornwall and its language, for his values and for his kindness.
Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.
