Lostwithiel - Lostwydhyel

Continue north from Golant to Lostwithiel/Lostwydhyel. This is a small town in at the head of the estuary of the River Fowey and is on the A290 toward St Austell and Truro. Lostwithiel Railway Station, which is just across the medieval bridge to the south of the town, is on the Cornish Main Line between Plymouth and Penzance.

Amongst Lostwithiel's most notable buildings is St Bartholomew's Church which is a Grade 1 listed building. It is mainly fourteenth century and also includes a tower from the thirteenth century, with a spire added in the early fourteenth century. Of the same date is the east window of five lights and carved font. Close to the town Restormel Castle is located on high ground above the strategically important River Fowey. Probably built at around 1100 and following the Norman Conquest and then further developed late in that century with the village of Lostwithiel close to it. It was the site of battles during the English Civil war. There is also a five arched medieval bridge that crosses the River Fowey.

There are rail links from Lostwithiel Railway. National Express provide a regular coach service to London which runs via Plymouth for connections to other destinations. A bus to St Austell also operates via St Blazey.
