Doing Business in Irish - Gaelic League Boosts Support for Irish Speaking Enterprises

The Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) in partnership with Foras na Gaeilge have introduced the first directory of firms in Ireland who do business in Gaelic. The partnership directory is available through the PEIG.ie website and Pieg.ie app (linked below) and users can locate businesses by category, Irish Province and County. Utilizing the services provided by these businesses directly supports the Gaelic Tongue as the listed firms are Gaelic speaking workplaces which provide goods and services in Irish thus creating an economic demand for proficiency in Gaelic.

Conradh na Gaeilge is the main voluntary community organization that promotes the Irish language in Ireland and abroad. The League’s primary objective is the reinstatement of the Irish language as the common tongue of Ireland.  The Gaelic League's partner in maintining the PEIG directory is Foras na Gaeilge, the state agency for the promotion of Irish for the whole island of Ireland. Foras na Gaeilge was founded in 1999 under the provisions of the Good Friday Agreement. Under the agreement Foras na Gaeilge is charged to facilitate and encourage the speaking and writing of Irish in the public and private arena in the Republic of Ireland, and in Northern Ireland, under the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages.

Eolaire Gnó PEIG, the first Irish-language business directory for smartphones, will be available free of charge via the PEIG.ie app from 7.30am this Thursday, 27 July 2017.

Users can find services in Irish searching by category, by province and county, or by locating a service on the interactive map on the PEIG.ie app. There is also an option to search for nearby services in the vicinity using your phone’s GPS.

Niall Comer, President of Conradh na Gaeilge says:

“This free service is being provided for the general public by Conradh na Gaeilge, and the business directory on our PEIG.ie app is a fantastic source of valuable information for those wanting to find services through Irish across the country. We also hope that it will encourage businesses to provide more of their services through Irish for their customers.”

Over 120 businesses have already registered their services in Irish with PEIG to date. Other businesses can also register their Irish-language services at eolaire.peig.ie or on the PEIG.ie app.

Every business that registers with Eolaire Gnó PEIG receives a support package with various resources with which they can promote Irish in the workplace, and can let the public know that Irish-language services are available to them.

Louise Ní Fhearghail, Coordinator of PEIG with Conradh na Gaeilge says:

“Irish speakers are consumers too, and most of them would prefer to spend their euros and pounds on businesses that actively promote the Irish language. This means that companies can attract more customers by using Irish as a unique selling point, and by advertising their Irish-language services for free on Eolaire Gnó PEIG.

“Now that the business directory has been completely integrated into the PEIG.ie app, it will be easier than ever for customers looking for services in Irish to do their business as Gaeilge while out shopping.”

The Irish-language business directory was only available via the eolaire.peig.ie website until now, but the Eolaire Gnó will launch on the PEIG.ie app with a public treasure hunt for Irish-language services in the capital later today (27 July 2017). Participants from the public are welcome to join the fun by gathering at Conradh na Gaeilge’s offices at 6 Harcourt Street at 7.30pm where they will be divided into teams of four. #EuroGaelach is the hashtag for the hunt and teams will receive live clues via Twitter to find services in Irish throughout the city centre. The fastest team will win drinks vouchers for tonight’s Pop Up Gaeltacht in Zozimus worth €100.
