Aberdeen (Scottish Gaelic: Obar Dheathain) is a city in the north-east of Scotland. The island of Vanna is on the northern coast of Norway, about 1,118 miles (1800km) away. So it was with some surprise that a local Aberdeen football club got a message from Johnny Mikalsen, who is a shopkeeper in Vanna, saying that he had their football. The Banks o' Dee youth team can regularly see their footballs going over the fence of their ground and dropping over into the nearby River Dee. Once that happens it is just accepted that they are lost. However this ball had travelled more than a thousand miles and was found by Nils Hugo, a friend of the shopkeeper and had the name of the team written on it.
At the time Johnny Mikalsen, told local press, Norsk Rikskringkasting, that he would give the ball back to its owners when on a planned visit to Scotland. Now, true to his word, Mr Mkalsen, has delivered the football back to the Aberdeen club. Banks o' Dee FC secretary Tom Ewan said that, despite its epic journey, the ball was in remarkable condition. Johnny was given a Banks o' Dee football top, a pennant and a bottle of malt whisky when he brought the ball to the club. The makers of the ball, Mitre, sent the club a new one saying 'don't lose this one'.
