Stunning Support For the Irish Language Revealed by Poll

A new research report into the attitudes of the residents of Ireland towards the Gaelic tongue has disclosed a stunning level of support for the Celtic tongue.  The report, which is entitled “Céard é an Scéal? Public Opinions Towards the Irish-Language – Annual Analysis 2”, shows over 60% people in the South endorse the provision of all State Services in the Irish Language.

The poll also shows significant levels of support for Gaelic in Ulster with 41% endorsing increased opportunities for daily use of the Celtic tongue outside formal educational settings.

Cóilín Ó Cearbhaill, President of Conradh na Gaeilge, has been quoted in press reports as follows: “This latest round of research commissioned by Conradh na Gaeilge indicates there is large support for the delivery of increased services and provision for the Irish-language and Gaeltacht communities. The second annual report in the Céard é an Scéa series offers a broad insight into the positive public opinions on the Irish language throughout Ireland alongside the current challenges facing Irish-language speakers. This should be a wake-up call for both governments to listen to public opinion and react accordingly.”

The Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaelige) is the main voluntary community organisation that promotes the Irish language in Ireland and abroad. The League’s primary objective is the reinstatement of the Irish language as the common tongue of Ireland.  Since its founding in 1893, members have been actively promoting Irish in every aspect of life in Ireland, from legal and educational affairs to the development of media and services through Irish.  Members of the Gaelic League are in the forefront of campaigns to strengthen the rights of the Irish speaking community.
