News From The Celtic League:
It’s quite obvious from the reaction that we have had that a lot of people take exception to having to fund the wages, household not to mention the food and drinks bill of the Lt Governor.
With another one due shortly (Charles Hawtrey lookalike Sir Richard Gozney) for a five year stint of freeloading of the hard pressed Manx tax payer and Mec Vannin once again pressing the Manx government on the issue I thought I would try and work out why we find ourselves funding these wasters on a five yearly basis. I mean who decided all those years ago, when the Isle of Man had a per capita income similar to Bangladesh, that we would foot the bill. Was it handed down on a tablet by Moses?
The best source for information is the Tynwald web pages which tell you most things even if they don’t provide much detail on ‘bullying MHKs’ or ‘pole-dancing MLCs’.
Sure enough there is a page which sets out in some detail what’s rather grandly termed:
THE ESTATES OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE ISLE OF MAN AND THEIR MEMBERSHIP
You will find the link here:
http://www.tynwald.org.im/links/tls/TC/Pages/C1.aspx
It says in the section about Governors;
‘Governors are given a household to carry out their duties and the costs are borne by the Isle of Man Government’.
Basically that’s it – we should all be so lucky!
I looked in the notes and links at the foot of the page but could find no explanation as to how, when, why or under what protocol or Act of Tynwald this situation arose. Nor can I find anything on line about the situation ever having been reviewed.
Anyway I’m sure it’s all above board and the Lt Governor has a contract of employment somewhere that sets out wages and benefits in kind. But are there any constraints or is the case ‘a la George Formby’ that it’s a case of ‘No Limit’!
