Doe Castle - Caisleán na dTuath

Doe Castle (Irish: Caisleán na dTuath) is near Creeslough, County Donegal (Irish: An Craoslach, Contae Dhún na nGall). This castle was built in the fifeenth century. It has a central tower surrounded by defensive wall and overlooking the sea on three sides. It was the seat of the Clan Suihbne and where Owen Roe O'Neil landed to lead the Irish rebellion in 1642. The castle was inhabited until 1843. It was acquired by the Land Commision in 1932. In 1934 was declared a national monument and was acquired by the Office of Public Works. The Towerhouse of the castle underwent significant restoration in the 1990s. There is a beautifully carved Mac Sweeney grave-slab, dating from 1544, on show inside the tower house. There is information displayed at the site that gives detailed information on the castle’s history. The Castle grounds are open daily with guided tours of the towerhouse available during the Summer months.
