Cornwall Branch Celtic League tackles BBC over lack of co operation

Information release from the Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League:

"On 19th March, 2014, the BBC aired a programme entitled ‘W1A’ which was supposed to be humorous. Several reports in the media followed which informed people in Cornwall expressed dismay at the programme’s treatment of the Cornish who were portrayed in the usual bigoted manner by the London based broadcaster.

Accordingly, the Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League wrote to the BBC under the Freedom of Information Act requiring them to inform how many complaints had been received in respect of their programme.

The BBC declined to comply and so the Cornwall Branch wrote once again and drew the BBC’s attention to the fact that they willingly release such figures in respect of other programmes and reminding them that they are a publicly funded organisation.

The BBC again declined.

The Cornwall Branch then wrote to several MPs including Government Ministers. Following this, a meeting is to occur between Dan Rogerson MP who is a Minister in the Coalition government and the Director General of the BBC in order to establish exactly what the BBC has to hide.

With public trust in the BBC at a low, the Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League believes that the Corporation should be more transparent particularly when broadcasting any matters regarding Cornwall and the Cornish people especially as the BBC has a track record of poor customer delivery in respect of the Cornish.
