Ulster Gaelic Athletic Association Promotes the Irish Language

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which represents all counties in the Province of Ulster, have announced a collaboration with the University of Ulster. The GAA is an athletic association of the sports of Hurling, Gaelic Football, Camogie and Handball.

The scholarship scheme will provide financial assistance to GAA members who pursue a Diploma in the Irish Language. The University's web page described the benefits of the scholarship: "Students are instructed in listening, speaking, reading and writing (Irish) and many diploma graduates progress to the degree course in Irish Language and Literature." The web page 4NI, quotes Donegal's All Ireland footballer, Eamon McGee, in praise of the scholarship scheme.

The University's announcement quoted Martin McAviney, Chair of GAA Community Development, Strategy & Public Affairs: "This initiative enhances the existing strong links between the GAA and the University, developing the current sporting partnership with a new cultural and linguistic dimension."
