Failure of Labour and the Scottish Media

When the Scottish National Party (SNP) rode to such a decisive victory in Scotland in the May 7th 2015 UK General Election political and media supporters of the Union (keeping Scotland within the United Kingdom) got a bloody nose. The SNP has completely altered the political landscape in Scotland. They won 56 of the nation's 59 seats. The biggest losers were the Labour Party which was left with just one Member of Parliament, losing 40 seats. Punished heavily for years of contempt, where they took for granted the Scottish voters loyalty without delivering on their promises. 

Urdd Eisteddfod Caerffili a’r Cylch 25 – 30 Mai 2015 (Urdd National Eisteddfod Comes to Caerphilly)

One of Europe's largest youth touring festivals will be in Caerphilly between 25-30 May 2015. The Urdd National Eisteddfod attracts around 90,000 visitors each year. Over 15,000 children and young people under the age of 25 will take part in various competitions such as singing, dancing and performing during Eisteddfod week. Information about the annual Welsh-language festival can be obtained from the Urdd website.

Turning on the Radio this morning I thought I had accidentally tuned to the BFBS (for those not up to speed with military parlance that’s the British Forces Broadcasting Service), but no, it was just the latest bulletin from military-fest on Douglas (Isle of Man) Promenade where the British Army are staging a ‘show’.

Conveniently it is just across from entertainments venue the Villa Marina so if the weather turns inclement they can take the show indoors.

The news that Police Scotland is to seek access to a recently declassified US Senate Report into CIA rendition using Scottish Airports including Prestwick as stop-offs when illegally detained persons were transported to torture centres is a clear vindication of over ten years of campaigning by the Celtic League and other Rights groups.

Over ten years ago the Celtic League pressed the (then) Strathclyde Police to investigate the allegations.

It’s reported that on there way home after there first ‘stint’ at Westminster some of the new intake of SNP Members of Parliament stopped at the monument at Smithfield in London, the site of the execution of William Wallace. It is rumoured one of their number Tommy Sheppard wept.

Of course home in Scotland they also have the huge and striking Wallace Monument and many other commemorative statues.

As the Island tries to forge new economic initiatives in markets such as China what signal does it send that the Island is still ‘overseen’ by a person termed ‘Lt. Governor’.

People have derided nationalists for suggested the name change saying it is unimportant, but as the Chief Minister remarked on a recent visit to China, now seen as a potentially vital economic zone of interest for Mann, ‘status’ is important.

Saskatchewan Highland Gathering and Celtic Festival 2015 Hailed a Success

Victoria Park, Regina in the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan hosted another successful Saskatchewan Highland Gathering and Celtic Festival last weekend. The event took place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May, featuring all elements of Scottish culture. The sound of pipes and drums filled the air as a festival of music, dance, song and athletics took place in Victoria Park.

Isle of Man: Tallis Consort Bids Farewell to Musical Director at Spring Concert

Tallis Consort's recent spring concerts, held at St Paul's Church, Ramsey, and St Mary's Church in Douglas, were dedicated to the memory of former MHK Charles Cain, one of the founding members of the early music group and until recent times its Musical Director.

The first half included a selection of choral music from many composers living between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, including William Byrd, J. S. Bach and the group's eponymous inspiration Thomas Tallis.

Festival Interceltique Lorient 7th to 16th August 2015

Brittany is the Celtic Nation that hosts the Festival Interceltique Lorient. The build up to this years event which takes place from 7th - 16th  August continues. In 2015 the featured Celtic Nations are Cornwall (Kernow) and the Isle of Man (Mannin). The festival is a celebration of Celtic culture, language, song, music and dance with artists coming from all over the world to perform. Glen Innes 2015 Australian Celtic Festival Resounding Success

This year saw the 23rd Australian Celtic Festival at Glen Innes. Record numbers flocked to the New South Wales town of Glen Innes to experience this very unique festival celebrating the music, song, dance and culture of all the Celtic Nations. The main events of the festival took place between the 30th April to 3rd May. Glen Innes is a town known for its friendly people and welcoming atmosphere. Celts from all over Australia celebrated along with locals and tourists from abroad. A street parade, concerts and events taking place all over Glen Innes demonstrate how much this warm hearted town has embraced this wonderful festival of all things Celtic. Each year there is a featured Celtic Nation and this year it was Wales (Cymru). Next year 2016 will celebrate the Isle of Man (Mannin).
