The Festival Interceltique de Lorient Designates Scotland As Honoured Country In 2017.

Next year's Lorient Inter-Celtic Festival (Breton: Gouelioù Etrekeltiek An Oriant) sees Scotland as the designated honoured country for the year 2017. Each summer, around 700,000 people from all over the world come to Lorient in the Celtic nation of Brittany for the Festival Interceltique de Lorient to celebrate Celtic music, song, dance, art and culture . Next years Festival, the year of Scotland, takes place from 4 to 13 August 2017.

Cornish Language Revival Takes Step Forward

The Gorsedh Kernow, an organisation with ancient roots which is a driving force in the protection and promotion of Celtic culture in Cornwall, have announced that a record 55 students have successfully completed the Cornish language examinations. The organization announced a 20% increase over 2015 which is an undeniable sign of the strengthening of the Celtic language revival in Cornwall.

Courageous Bishop Edward Daly dies age 82

The death has taken place of Catholic Bishop Edward Daly who was present in Derry's Bogside on Bloody Sunday in 1972. An enduring image of that dreadful day, 30 January 1972, was Father Edward Daly waving a white blood-stained handkerchief while he and others courageously tried to escort the mortally wounded 17 year old Jackie Duddy to safety.

Isle of Man: Manx Performers Support their Antipodean Cousins in Lorient

After the Island's phenomenal success at last year's Lorient Inter-Celtic Festival, which put the Isle of Man firmly on the map for hundreds of thousands of visitors to the event, Manx officials and entertainers will be mixing with their antipodean cousins at the start of this month.

It has been ten years since Australia was designated as the honoured country, but with substantial emigration from countries such as Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man, approximately half of its population can lay claim to Celtic roots.

Cymru: Emulate The Basque Way Say Language Campaigners

This report (see link) from the Daily Post says Welsh language campaign group Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg want the Government to emulate steps taken in the Basque Country and create business parks where the native tongue is spoken.

According to Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg the move would boost Welsh, attract thousands of jobs and stop young Welsh workers from leaving the country.

Isle of Man: Douglas Bay Horse Tramway Celebrates 140th Anniversary

As the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway reaches its one hundred and fortieth anniversary, debate still rages about its future, although many of the issues raised during recent discussion are reflected throughout its long history.

Requiring an Act of Tynwald, the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway was created by entrepreneur Thomas Lightfoot in 1876, after he retired to Douglas. A Yorkshireman by birth, Lightfoot's other notable achievements included the first Woodhead Railway Tunnel.

More than 500 games will be played over the course of the week-long festival.

It is expected that as many as 7,000 people will be involved in the Etihad Airways GAA World Games festival in Dublin between players, team officials, administrators, families and supporters.

News from Mannin Branch of the Celtic League:

At the annual Illiam Dhone commemoration in January 2015 I called for a greater emphasis to be placed by Manx nationalists on remembering those prominent in the political and cultural sides of the National movement.

To that end in November last year there were commemorations to remember two icons of the Manx cultural revival, Sophia Morrison, who is synonymous with the Gaelic renaissance at the start of the twentieth century and Colin Jerry, who was very much a pivotal figure in restoring its fortunes at the end of the century
