Irish Government Respond on Sellafield Safety

NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

The Irish Government has responded to a query from the Celtic League relating to safety issues at the Sellafield nuclear plant. The League had written to them in late November 2014.

The Irish and British now have in place an agreement whereby Irish Environmental Protection Agency staff (EPA) meet regularly with UK counterparts in relation to the accident prone nuclear facility on the Cumbria coast.

Scotland's Gaelic College (Sabhal Mòr Ostaig) Announces Conference On Strengthening Celtic Language Revival

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Scotland’s Gaelic College Founded in 1973 and internationally recognised as a National Centre for the Gaelic language and culture, have announced the second Soillse conference, “ Bilingual Education and Language Revitalisation: From Theory to Practice”  The conference is being held in conjunction with CAER, the Education Society of the European Regions, and hosted by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and its academic partner The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). The conference will be held on the 28th of May, 2015.

St Dwynwen’s Day (Welsh: Dydd Santes Dwynwen) falls on 25th January every year. People all over Wales celebrate St Dwynwen's Day, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. St Dwynwen is the Welsh equivalent of St Valentine. Dwynwen - whose names translates to "she who leads a blessed life" - still enjoys great popularity throughout Wales, particularly in her home of Anglesey (Welsh: Ynys Môn). Whilst the date is not widely known outside of Wales it has become increasingly popular in recent times. In Wales special events commemorating St Dwynwen’s day are held. Dydd santes dwynwen hapus (Happy St Dwynwen’s Day) to everyone celebrating on this special date.

It was said Dwynwen was the prettiest of Welsh King Brychan Brycheiniog's twenty-four daughters. Her father had arranged for her to marry, but she fell in love with another man; a prince named Maelon Dafodrill. Dwynwen knew she had to follow her father’s wishes and though it broke her heart prayed to God and asked for help to forget Maelon. She was visited by an angel as she slept who gave her a potion to erase her memory of feelings for Maelon and turn him into a block of ice.

Isle of Man: Michael Heritage Trust Provides Another Winner with Oie'll Verree Concert

The annual Oie'll Verree, held at the Ebenezer Hall in Kirk Michael, lifted the spirits of a packed house, as they enjoyed a concert which conveyed much about Manx rural life, providing humour, musicianship, dance and recitation.

With an extensive programme to get through, compére George Davison skilfully guided the audience through a selection of artistes, with the assistance of Marilyn Cannell at the piano and an army of background helpers.
