Isle of Man: Highlighting Celtic Influences in Literature

One of the highlights of the most recent Manx LitFest took place at the House of Manannan in Peel, where a panel of experts gathered to discuss the Celtic influence in literature before a packed audience at the Manx National Heritage venue.

Manx LitFest is an annual literary festival which has quickly become an established fixture on the Island's calendar, attracting a wide selection of well-known authors and readers of all ages, as well as encouraging local writers to develop their skills.

The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence are insisting Russian Aircraft which transited around the west of the British Isles recently before did not overfly southern Cornwall despite media claim to the contrary. NUCLEAR FIRE SHIP REPORT TO BE PUBLISHED SOON SAY DANISH EMBASSY

The Danish Ambassador has responded to a query from the Celtic League about the incident when the Danish vessel, MV Parida, caught fire and was disabled and drifting off N E Scotland. The vessel was carrying nuclear waste from the Dounreay nuclear plant.

The League had asked when the report into the incident (being compiled by Danish authorities) would be made available and if this would be in English.

It was less ‘the night of the long knives’ and more ‘the day of the blunt pens’.

A government Minister has moved swiftly to deny a newspaper article that he and colleagues were conspiring against the Isle of Man Chief Minister and planning a vote of no confidence.

The newspaper meanwhile, in the persona of its Editor, has rejected the denial standing by its article and defending the journalist who wrote it.

“the small size of a nation is not an obstacle to its success”. It’s a point those who carp on about the Isle of Man being too small to be independent might wish to ponder.

The 5th Annual Saint Augustine Celtic Music and Heritage Festival is being held at the city's Francis Field March 13th through 15th.  The oldest city in the United States, Saint Augustine was founded in 1565 and repeatedly subject to rapine pillage as the British, French and Spanish Empires fought for control of the Caribbean.  It is a place where the past is palpable and spirits are just out of sight.  Surrounded by water, inlets, back bays and not far from the ocean, this place has an Otherworldly quality.

Scots Gaelic Heartland Strengthens - Primary Schools Switch from English to Gaelic Medium Education

Earlier this month it was reported that Gaelic will become the language of instruction at approximately 25% of Primary schools in the Western Isles.  As recently as 1921 census figure shows 75% of the area’s populations were Gaelic speaking.  The Tongue has persisted in spite of the blow dealt by the vicious Education Act of 1872 that forbade the use of Scots Gaelic in the classroom.  This most recent strengthening of Gaelic medium education ensures that the language will continue its recover from the colonialist education polices typified by the 1872 law.

MANX BUDGET: NO PLAN B NO PLAN AT ALL!

It is not a case of ‘there’s no plan B’ it seems there is no plan at all.

When the Isle of Man budget was unveiled last week the Celtic League were bitingly critical of some aspects of it not least the vagary surrounding a new higher (£14000) tax threshold to be (possibly) introduced next year but of more immediate concern was the decision to claw-back tax credit (Personal Allowance Credit – PAC) and phase it out completely next year.
