Isle of Man: Launch of New Book of Manx Tunes for Bagpipes

This unique publication was recently launched at the Masonic Hall in Peel as part of a weekend of workshops organised by Island based Ellan Vannin Pipes and Drums.

Entertainment during the evening was provided by members of the Ellan Vannin Pipe Band, visiting piper Finlay MacDonald and Island based Scottish guitarist Malcolm Stitt.

Produced by Culture Vannin, Piob Vooar - Manx Music for Bagpipes, features thirty local songs and tunes and is seen as a useful addition to the repertoire of both solo pipers and pipe-bands.

Superb Isle of Man TT 2018 draws to an end with spectacular results

The last races of the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) 2018 were completed today. Results of the races can be viewed on the Isle of Man TT website.  From the date the qualifying rounds commenced on 26th May until the races ended on 8th June, the island has enjoyed brilliant dry and sunny conditions. This has allowed for some of the fastest times ever recorded in one of the world's greatest motorsport events. The International Isle of Man TT Race was first held on the Island in 1907.

House of Irish writer Tomás Ó Criomhthain restored on island of Great Blasket

Great Blasket (An Blascaod Mór in Irish) is the principal island of the Blaskets, County Kerry, Ireland (Na Blascaodaí, Contae Chiarraí, Éire). The islands were inhabited until 1953 by a completely Irish-speaking population, and are part of the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking region in Ireland). The inhabitants were evacuated by the government to the mainland of Ireland on 17 November 1953. 

Scottish National Party Conference 2018 underway

The Scottish National Party (SNP) 2018 Conference is taking place from Friday 8th June - Saturday 9th June 2018 in the Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre (AECC). The gathering comes at a time of a remarkable eleven years of SNP government in Scotland. About 2,000 delegates are expected to attend the two-day conference in Aberdeen and the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the party's leader, will speak on Saturday afternoon. In her welcome notes in the conference guide, she says the event "marks the start of a new chapter in Scotland's road to independence".

Value of Highland Games to Scotland placed at around £25m every year

All around the world people participate or are spectators at Scottish Highland Games. Seen as a way of celebrating Scottish customs it is one of Scotland’s biggest cultural exports. Features of the Games include competitions in piping and drumming, dancing, heavy athletics, as well all kinds entertainment and exhibits related to many aspects of Scottish and Gaelic culture.

The call for increased rights for Cornish people continues.

There has been much inaccurate reportage instigated by the BBC following a recent You Gov survey. Small numbers of people were asked misleading questions and of this organisation’s many hundreds of members, many subscribe to YouGov but not one has been involved in this survey. The results of this survey has been interpreted incorrectly by a number of mainstream media outlets and English extremists in an attempt to declare Cornish identity subsumed by England.

Irish President apologises to survivors of notorious Magdalene Laundries

Irish President Michael D Higgins has apologised to thousands of women forced to work in the country's Magdalene Laundries. The Magdalene Laundries were also known as Magdalene asylums. These institutions were usually run by Roman Catholic orders but were supported by the state. It has been estimated that over 10,000 were confined in these prison like institutions in Ireland. They housed so-called.  "fallen" women who were branded as both a mother and a criminal if they happened to have a child outside of marriage.
