The Ministry of Defence is showing a marked reluctance to respond to a query we forwarded to Defence Minister, Michael Fallon, in May 2015 asking about an alarming increase in drug abuse in the British armed forces (see link):

The Celtic League has written to the Minister for Economic Development asking about the steps taken to monitor conditions for crew members on merchant vessels which are registered in the Isle of Man.

The Manx Shipping Registry was the subject of a resolution adopted at the AGM of the Celtic League held in Dublin earlier this year.

Entitled All Aboard Please! Manx Buses Part Two, this particular presentation has been issued in addition to a previous release in 1999, and features a selection of nostalgic images highlighting vehicles used by both Douglas Corporation and Road Services fleets, which later amalgamated under the banner of Isle of Man National Transport during 1976.

These wonderfully evocative pictures depict vehicles used on the Island during the 1930s and 1940s and have been especially commissioned by local artist Peter Hearsey to mark the fortieth anniversary of Isle of Man Transport.

Major Scottish Festival Promotes Gaelic Language and Culture: HebCelt 2015

The 2oth annual Hebcelt Festival will be held this week, July 15 - 18,  at Lews Castle in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides.  The Festival is being praised for its promotion  of Gaelic culture and Language.

The Island's biggest annual Inter-Celtic festival, Yn Chruinnaght, will return to Peel later this month, with a line-up of performers reflecting all that's best about music, song and dance from the Celtic Diaspora, with fringe events in Ramsey, Laxey and Douglas.

A coup for this year's festival is securing the Anglo-Irish band Flook, described as possessing a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination, at the Centenary Centre in Peel.

The Irish Naval Service vessel LÉ Niamh left Cork this weekend for the Mediterranean where she will take over the migrant rescue role already being undertaken in that area by the LÉ Eithne.

Since being deployed to the Mediterranean as part of a strengthened EU search and rescue response the Irish Naval service has rescued almost 3,500 migrants.

The Irish government has welcomed the decision last month of a Military Tribunal in Lebanon to start hearing the case of Mahmoud Bazzi who is alleged to have been responsible for the murder of two soldiers of the UN Irish contingent to UNIFIL in that country.

Australian Tynwald Ceremony Celebrates Mannin at Glen Innes

Tynwald Day (Manx: Laa Tinvaal) is the National Day of the Isle of Man (Mannin) and is traditionally held on 5th July. The Manx Flag flew high on 5 July 2015 at the site of the Australian Standing Stones, Glen Innes, NSW, Australia. Manx Bonnag was eaten, which is a traditional bread that has been a Manx staple for hundreds of years. Along with this fish and potato pie and a white liquor based on buttermilk was served as part of the ceremony.

One wonders is any kind of advance information available to the Manx Treasury Minister, Eddie Teare, MHK or whether he is just so headstrong and self obsessed that he just ploughs ahead regardless. Either way he’s rapidly turning into the Stan Laurel of Manx politics!
