Turning to the ballot box as a weapon in the struggle to advance the Irish Language, Conradh na Gaeilge (The Gaelic League) are calling on candidates in the upcoming local and European Parliamentary elections to declare their support for the Irish tongue.
The Irish Times under the headline “Conradh na Gaeilge Pushes Irish as an Election Issue” reports that the organisation is calling on candidates to make public their position on supporting the Irish tongue so that voters can make their decision on which candidate to support using this information.
Mr. Julian de Spainn, General Secretary of Conradh na Gaeilge, is quoted stating that this is a “pivotal time for the Irish language”, and that supporters of the Irish Language should “...stand together to ensure that the necessary support for the language is forth coming from our future politicians, in Ireland and in Europe”.
The Gaelic League is an organisation that has been defending the rights of Irish speakers since the League was founded in 1893. The League's support was instrumental in the passgae of the "Official Language Act - 2003", which strengthened the status of the Irish language.
