Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay has secured a debate in Parliament on the case for recognition of Cornish national identity in the 2021 census.
Coming up on Monday 11 June, the Adjournment Debate will look at Cornwall’s unique identity and the case for a tick box for people to identify as being ‘Cornish’ in the next national census.
Commenting, Steve said:
“I am absolutely delighted to have secured an Adjournment Debate on the Cornish national identity and the 2021 census.”
“Along with Cornish MP colleagues and Cornwall Council I have been campaigning for the inclusion of a tick box for people who identify as Cornish on the next national census.”
“My recent appointment to the Council of Europe, the body that recognised the Cornish ethnic minority status, will allow me to champion the cause of Cornwall and the Cornish on a wider stage, but it is also very important to keep pushing for the changes we need in Parliament.”
“As a proud Cornishman I have always been clear that speaking up for Cornwall will always be my priority in Parliament and this debate will provide another opportunity to so just that.”
“I look forward to leading this debate and pressing the case for change on 11 June.”
