Menhir Champ-Dolent is the largest menhir in Brittany (Breton: Breizh). Brittany is famous for its many megalithic sites. Where large pre-historic stones have been used to create a structure or monument, which can either be alone or in groups. The giant Menhir Champ-Dolent standing stone is a granite Neolithic monument located 2 kilometres (1 mile) south of Dol-de-Bretagne (Breton: Dol). Its height above ground is between 9.3 and 9.5 metres (about 31 feet). It has an estimated weight of around 100 tonnes.
This standing stone is thought to date to c. 5000–4000 BC. There are a number of legends attached to the menhir. One being that it will predict the end of the world and that the stone is slowly sinking into the ground. The world will end when it disappears altogether. Another legend is that the menhir fell from the skies to separate two feuding brothers who were on the point of killing each other. This legend says that before the stone put an end to the fight the two brothers and their armies had spilt so much blood that it formed a river that flowed into nearby stream causing the wheel of a mill to turn.
