Whilst we accept that direct action taken by some of our youngsters who draped a banner over a bridge in an attempt to protect Cornwall from the influx of rule ignoring visitors earlier in 2020 may have been rather futile, and after all, we were all young once and had little or no confidence in the 'democratic' system, an exercise conducted to reveal the underhand tactics by some tourist companies has shown one up for being what they truly are!
The company caught in this 'honey trap' is not even based in Cornwall but are part of the extractive industry which sees much profit made in Cornwall and much money leave as well. This method of revealing the true cost of reckless uncontrolled tourism and the damage it has on the resident population of Cornwall has proven effective and is likely to be repeated. After all, and as mother used to say, 'there's more than one way to skin a cat!'
Useful to bear in mind that elections in Cornwall are scheduled for 2021 and with a considerable reduction in the number of Councillors following the outrageously undemocratic review, perhaps people in Cornwall will start voting for those who really stand up and speak out for them and not the extractive and destructive concerns we see about us? Perhaps now would be the time for a tourist tax as seen in many other places including some in the British Isles? Perhaps Cornwall could learn a thing or two about the procactive approaches taken by the governments of Wales, Scotland and the Isle of Man? We think so.
We trust all elected representatives will join us in condemning those who place profit before public wellbeing and be assured that if any more rule breaking is revealed by 'honey trapping' tourism businesses, we have it on good authority that the mainstream media will be informed.
