MTTV has a item on the Post Office consultation. I hastily have to check this isn’t an archive piece because this was announced a while ago even I pontificated on it. Obviously MTTV have been busy with trivia and are catching up.
Julie Edge MHK (Post Office Chairperson) is in the MTTV hot seat but mentally I see Alf Cannan MHK. The Post Office has been making money for years and passing it over to the Treasury - Moulton uses the term a ‘cash cow’ it may not be PC but its appropriate. Anyway once the Post Office hits a bit of turbulence Treasury Minister Alf Cannan MHK is there like a barking dog probably with Chris Thomas MHK and his abacus in support (they are an inseparable duo even if Bill Shimmins MHK is trying to come between them) calling in the bailiffs. I defo see the hand of Alf and his SAVE chums in this but then my obsession with Alf is becoming unreasonable I should seek help. Perhaps a course of treatment that involved listening to Chris Thomas MHK recite statistics which must be the political equivalent of electroconvulsive therapy.
I’ve had enough of Alf after all he is the MHK for Kirk Michael the ‘Old Sarum’ of the Isle of Man, Not content with failing to tackle the business expenses culture now he wants to decimate my Post Office enough is enough.
I like the red vans, the posties, I’ve even learned to enjoy standing in the queues in the local sub post office. It’s called ‘community’ Alf something you and your ‘Chamber of Post Office Destroying’ chums don’t appreciate because they are wired up to ‘the internet of things’. The ultimate demise of the PO via the death of a thousand cuts would suit the Chamber. The PO bucks the trend it’s well run and up until recently highly profitable and it recognises Trade Unions. All those things are anathema to the political equivalent of potato blight that inhabits Athol Street. Now I’m trying to determine if its Alf or the Chamber I loath most - its level pegging at present.
Alf is cunning he always wants someone else to be the villain he’s driving the changes but whoever is in the hot seat at the PO will do. It wouldn’t matter to Alf who it was it could even be Jason Moorhouse MHK - god forbid.
The only thing making Alfs seat ‘hot’ is the desire to move in to Chief Minister Howard Quayle MHKs place. He is in pursuit of power (to rob a quote from a CL colleague) ‘ a driven man’ or to use my own term ‘like a slavering dog’! His SAVE initiative has to succeed and if that means health service cuts, more expensive electricity or a truncated Post Office it doesn’t matter. Alf has to present himself as saviour of the public purse and be rewarded with the Emperors hat. Then he’ll leave Thomas and Shimmins to squabble over who runs Treasury and Howard Quayle will be put out to grass - literally!
The Isle of Man Post Office will survive Amazon etc or any fall in philatelic sales should that occur what it won’t survive is Alfs towering ego.
‘Say no to Alf SAVE the Post Office’! Is the only relevant response to this consultation.
I’m not going to use Moulton’s video this is better (link):
